About John Hoare

A lighting cameraman and DOP based in London, I've been shooting since 1990 across digital and celluloid and have filmed in some 15 countries.

I've been DoP on 3 eps of BBC Casualty, 60 eps of BBC Doctors, and DOP on three feature films (imdb). I've worked for brands such as Daily Telegraph, Historic England, Facebook and DHL. I edit on Final Cut X, Premiere and Resolve; and I offer drone videography.

I have been director of photography on award winning drama (The Other Man, Best Short Film, Edinburgh Film Festival) and am always looking out for good scripts.

I am an approved BBC freelancer, and have completed the BBC Safeguarding Trust course. In Jan 2017 I co-presented with colourist Kevin Shaw a workshop "Shooting for HDR" for the Guild of Television Camera Professionals.

I serve the story and love my work.

"Quick, resourceful, extremely knowledgeable and patient. Great to be around and I can’t wait to collaborate again."

Savvas D. Michael, director of featurefilm The  Bezonians (imdb)
"I’ve worked with many DoPs and John is definitely up there with the best of them. His lighting is evocative and he can capture mood wonderfully. His camerawork is truly professional. He’s flexible in his approach, constructive, fast and efficient with a great sense of humour and genuine a joy to work with. His experience shows in the quality of his work. I shall be using his tremendous talent again.”

David Lewis Richardson, director Doctors, Producer Father Brown.
